What is the punishment for bearing false witness?

is it considered a crime?

is there a big punishment?

or is it only a biblical commandment? What is the punishment for bearing false witness?
It depends on when you do it. If you are under oath, it is perjury, which is a felony in most states (although, as the answer above says, it is not commonly enforced). If you are reporting something to a police officer, it is making a false police report, which is a misdemeanor in most states. That law is much more often enforced.

EDIT: Oh yeah - and depending on what you are bearing false witness about, it could be a host of other crimes: aiding and abetting, obstruction of justice, harboring a futigive, etc. What is the punishment for bearing false witness?
In U.S. courts, referred to as perjury. Typically, not enforced.
