How do scientists guard against false data?

Yes, this is my homework. And yes, I have already looked all over the internet trying to find the answer.

Does anyone know?How do scientists guard against false data?
Key phrase:

Repeatability = Reliability

The best safe guard against false data is to do the experiment yourself.

If you follow the same procedure they followed and you get the same, or similar, results, then the data is probably correct.

If you get results that are completely different, then the data was probably falsified.

This is why the scientists who claimed to have discovered cold fusion back in the 70s was called a fraud; no one could repeat his experiment.How do scientists guard against false data?
It's a matter of integrity and presentation to their peers for peer review and criticism. They submit their research in journals to be inspected by other equally knowlegable scientist who may try to do the same research and either support or refute the original paper.
