What are examples of when the media reported on a story that was false or distorted and people believed it?

I'm looking for examples in which the media reported a story that was just utterly false or was distorted in some way, and yet the general populace believed it, at least for a while. The swift-boating of John Kerry.





The idea that Al Gore claimed to have invented the internet... he never made the claim --instead he, correctly said that as senator he was the prime sponsor for the adapting of Arpnet, which was the beginning of the internet as we know it. In other words he told 100% truth and people still rag on him for it.





Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, and had something to do with 9/11.
