I took a test today, one came up positive, the other negative. How often do false positives come up?How often does one get a false positive on a pregnacy test?
False positives are rare (1%) chance but they DO happen. Its best to follow up with a medical professional.
Why would I get a false positive on a pregnancy test? this link is to a great article about false positives.

It's pretty rare to get a false positive. Take another one just to be sure, and maybe try it first thing in the morning.
it doesnt happen to often bet you a million you are pregnant
Not very often. If you get that it is best to go to a dr to check for sure. Usually even the most cheap dollar store pregnancy tests are reliable.
False negative is much more likely. The only time you get a false postive is when you've just had a baby or a miscarriage.
there is no such thing as a false positive pregnancy test, the tests check for a hormone level that only pregnant people have. Once you have it, it doesnt just go away!
You could go out and pay for another OTC test, but I recommend you go see a doctor instead. He or she will do a blood test which will provide an accurate answer.
I agree with everyone else. I've never heard of a false positive, but false negatives are possible.
if you had a postive then you are most likely pregnant. Good luck and time to see you doctor.
Reasons to get one that was negitive- Taking the test to close to the other. Your pee didn't have time to rebuild the hcg levels. Or it was postive and just didn't noctice it, any lightness of colored line is postive. taking the postive in the morning and the negitive on during the day.
Extremely rare....
Its not very likely that its a palse positive. The only reason for a false positive is you're on some sort of medication to make the test think you have HCG in your body or its really an evaporation line. Its way more likely to have a false negative than a false positive. The reason its more likely for a false negative is because all tests have different levels of sensitivity. A more sensitive test will be able to tell you if you're pregnant sooner than a less sensitive one. SO if your positive test is more sensitive than the test that read negative, theres your answer.
A false positive is pretty unheard of. I'm betting that you took one first thing in the morning (when hormones are most concentrated in urine because it has been sitting in your bladder for a while) and one later on (when they are diluted because urine does not sit for as long) right? Or, 2 different brands (one can be detecting a lower level of hcg then the other). What I would do is retest using your 1st morning urine with a test like 1st response or, if you have missed a period already use the clear blue easy digital.
Very Best Wishes!
It depends on the test.
Most pregnancy tests are 99% accurate. Meaning only 1% of the people that take the test will get a wrong reading... whether the results are a false positive or a false negative... soooo, that would be under 1% chance of getting a false positive.
Like I said though, it depends on the test. If you got a cheap one from the 99cent store, its accuracy could be a lot different.
VERY RARE take another one but you are most likely pregnant
honey you are pregnant-it is very very rare to get a false positive. The reason you probably go a negative is because that particular test probably was not as sensitive as the other one!!
I have never heard of a false positive. False negatives have all the time. I was once told by an ob/gyn that you can have many false negatives but you will not get a false positive. I would say you are pregnant. Good luck and Congratulations!!!!
