How common are false results on pregnancy tests?

I believe I may be pregnant, I want to take the home test before I go see the doctor, and be pretty sure before I tell the father and give him the option of going to the doctor with me.

So what I'm wondering is should I buy a few of these tests? I've heard of false results coming up a lot and I want to be at least moderately sure. What's everyone's opinion on this?

Have I just heard of an abnormally high amount of false negatives from friends or does it really happen that frequently?

Thanks to all who answer! How common are false results on pregnancy tests?
False positives are actually very rare and if you get one, it could mean something is wrong so you would want to go to a doctor anyways. I would definitely take a test before you call the doctor and set up an appt though. If you get a positive- then call your obstetrics office and set up an appt. If you want to tell the father you might be pregnant, I would say that would be alright. I took two pregnancy tests before going to the doctor, as it was hard to believe. How common are false results on pregnancy tests?
false test are very common due to not being far enough along for the test to show a positive. i got plenty false negitives. but a false positive is rare due to the fact it detects the pregnancy hormone your body only produces while pregnant. if your period is late then you can test but for a better accurate result wait a week after your missed period. good luck
I had several false negatives before I got a positive test. I've heard that if you get pregnant while you're on birth control or shortly after you stop taking it that it can mess with your hormones and make the test come out wrong.
I've heard of it happening but it hasn't to me. Thay make some really good test that are great these days. Best wishes!!!!!ni
